About us

What is Summoned Equipment?

We're an outdoor equipment workshop based in Rotorua, NZ.

We make colorful, durable gear that works as nice as it looks.

We also take on repairs and custom sewing projects as well. We love problem solving and giving items life. We try to say yes to as many projects as we can, and don't limit ourselves just to "gear".

Most importantly, we have heaps of fun doing it all.

Why Summoned Equipment?

We believe in putting the “Fun” in Functional when it comes to outdoor equipment. More colour, more personality, more whimsy. Handmade gear holds a story, it serves as a conversation starter with strangers, it captures memories as you adventure, and ultimately it's likely to last longer.

The same principles apply to repairs. Fix it, and make it cool! Add that bright thread or that funky patch. We want to grow an item's story, bestow it with purpose, and snatch it from the clutches of landfill. We aim to create equipment that feels impossible to throw away.

We believe in local business and building strong communities. Human powered, self reliant adventures. Minimising consumerism. Getting outdoors with friends. The odd bit of type 2 fun. But mostly good, old fashioned adventures with a hint of spontaneity. Make someone’s day with your tin whistle at the top of an alpine pass. Stuff a watermelon in your pannier. Whip out Catan at camp. Strap that 2L chocolate milk to your rack.

And yes, dye your hair.

Jacob Molé

Gear Wizard Supreme

Jacob’s roots are in the design world, where he had a career as a graphic designer. However, sitting inside has never been his strength, so he stepped outside into the guiding world where he’s had many roles including: whitewater, climbing, canyoning and first response. He’s no stranger to thrashing his gear and he soon found that repairing and customizing his outdoor gear made him as happy as using it.

Caelum Betteridge

Equipment Archmage

Caelum has a background in mechanical engineering, so designing, prototyping, and optimising is right up his alley. In the last three years he has caught the bikepacking bug, spending over 150 nights in a tent while cycling 15,000 km across New Zealand, Japan, North America, and Europe. In-between he’s always looking to jump on some whitewater kayaking joy laps. Somewhere along the way Caelum realised that colourful gear just makes everything more fun.
